Methamphetamine is a powerful central nervous system stimulant, a synthetic drug, that has a high potential for abuse and dependence.

The drug works directly on the brain and spinal cord by interfering with normal neurotransmission. In the 1970s methamphetamine became a Schedule II drug – a drug with little medical use and a high potential for abuse.
